On the 29th March 2000 the top three groups from the undergraduate EE309 - Object Oriented Programming
module traveled to Logica to present their third year projects. The students
presenting were from both the Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications
Engineering undergraduate programmes (press on the images for
larger versions).
The project involved developing client/server 'pseudo' SMS applications to
demonstrate their knowledge of OOP and Java after completing a 6 week course in
their third year module. The project involved developing a phone interface
application that communicated with a server over TCP. The server that they
developed had to store and pass messages from the client phones onto other
client phones as they connected to the server.
The general quality of the projects in the course was high making it difficult to choose the three best projects out of a total of 15 groups. The final three projects had implemented features such as: advanced interfaces, SMS encryption (using IP) and threaded serving. They also demonstrated a good knowledge of OO design, group work and Java network programming.
The groups that went forward for presentation and their final results were:
The presentations were judged by Paul McCarthy, Brendan McGee and Paul Clarke (DCU graduate), all from Logica. The prizes supplied by Logica were generous, with the three winners receiving £250 travel vouchers each, the 2nd place group receiving £150 Arnotts vouchers each and the 3rd place group receiving £70 recreational vouchers each.

After lunch the groups were brought on a tour of Logica in Dublin, so see the work environment of graduate engineers and to also see the kind of equipment involved in Logica's business.

This type of co-operative activity between DCU and industry allows undergraduate students to become familiar with presentation in a work environment before they embark on their INTRA work placement period. It will aid them in their final year presentations and indeed in their final career.
Our thanks go out to Logica for their kind sponsorship and hosting of this event.
