Stream Control Transmission Protocol Stream Control Transmission Protocol is a new(ish) transport protocol standardised by the IETF. It was originally meant to be used to carry signaling traffic only and was designed by SigTran. However, at the bequest of the IETF, it became a general purpose transport protocol and is positioned in the same place of the TCP/IP protocol stack as TCP. It is quite reasonable to suggest that SCTP is the Next-Generation TCP, similar to how IPv6 is meant to supercede IPv4.
SCTP provides support for connection-oriented point-to-poing communication over
an IP-based network. It supports a number of key features, some are which are
adopted from TCP, others which differentiate it from TCP. These are:
